What does Genesis 37:25 mean?
Joseph's brothers have just thrown him into a pit, and now they're sitting down for a meal as if nothing has happened. That's when they notice merchants passing by with camels loaded with valuable goods headed to Egypt. In that moment, a terrible opportunity presents itself: they could sell their brother instead of killing him, and make money doing it. The detail about the spices and myrrh matters because it shows these weren't poor travelers but established traders dealing in luxury items, which makes the brothers' next decision feel almost practical to them, even though it's anything but. What looks like chance circumstance becomes the mechanism through which Joseph gets taken to Egypt, setting in motion the entire rest of his story and the survival of his family during the coming famine.
