Genesis 37:22
“Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand on him”—that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father.”
What does Genesis 37:22 mean?
Reuben, the oldest brother, is trying to stop his siblings from killing Joseph out of jealousy. Instead of letting them murder him, Reuben suggests they throw Joseph into an empty pit, secretly planning to come back later and rescue him so he can return home to their father Jacob. It's an act of mercy wrapped in a compromise, born from Reuben's position as the eldest brother who bears some responsibility for the others' actions. Though Reuben's plan doesn't work out the way he intends (the brothers end up selling Joseph into slavery instead), his willingness to intervene shows that even in a family torn apart by resentment, one person can still choose to protect rather than destroy.
