What does Genesis 34:12 mean?
When Shechem has violated Dinah and then wants to marry her, he's willing to pay whatever bride price her family demands. In the ancient Near East, a bride price (or dowry) was a standard part of marriage arrangements, and offering an unusually high one was a way to show serious commitment and respect for the family. Shechem's willingness to pay generously reflects how desperately he wants to make things right, or at least how much he desires Dinah as his wife. What makes this moment tragic is that no amount of money or good intentions can undo what's already happened, and her family's response shows how deeply the violation has wounded them.
