“He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob”.”
What does Genesis 32:27 mean?
In this moment, Jacob is wrestling with a mysterious figure (later understood as God or an angel) during one of the most vulnerable nights of his life, just before facing his estranged brother Esau whom he had deeply wronged years earlier. When asked his name, Jacob answers honestly: "Jacob"—which literally means "heel-grabber" or "deceiver," a name that reflects his past of scheming and taking shortcuts. What happens next is transformative: the figure tells Jacob he will no longer be called by that name, but Israel instead, because he has "struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed." Sometimes we need to speak our truth—to name ourselves and our past—before we can be remade into who we're meant to become. This isn't about pretending our failures don't exist, but about bringing them into the light where real change can happen.
