Genesis 32:23
“He took them, and sent them over the stream, and sent over that which he had.”
What does Genesis 32:23 mean?
Jacob is preparing for a terrifying reunion with his brother Esau, whom he cheated years earlier. In this moment, he's strategically sending his wives, children, and possessions across the Jabbok stream first, placing them at a distance from the conflict he fears is coming. It's a very human response to danger: protect what matters most by moving it to safety. What makes this passage poignant is that Jacob keeps himself alone on the other side. He's about to spend the night wrestling with God (or a divine messenger, depending on interpretation), a moment that will transform him. Sometimes we have to face our deepest fears and wrestle with our faith in solitude before we can move forward whole.
