What does Genesis 30:3 mean?
Rachel, unable to have children herself, offers her servant Bilhah to Jacob as a surrogate, following a common practice of her time when childlessness was seen as a deep shame. The phrase "bear on my knees" was a way of claiming a child born through this arrangement as legally and socially hers. This story shows the desperation people felt to have children, but it also reveals how that desperation led to complicated harm, as Bilhah had no real choice in the matter. Even in Scripture's honest telling of family life, we see how pain and powerlessness can cause people to make arrangements that hurt others, reminding us that having a desire doesn't always make it right to pursue it any way we can.
