What does Genesis 3:4 mean?

The serpent's contradiction of God's warning marks the moment doubt enters the world. God had told Adam and Eve they would die if they ate from the forbidden tree, but the serpent suggests this is false, that God is withholding something good from them out of selfishness rather than care. This lie is seductive because it plants the idea that God cannot be trusted, that His boundaries are actually restrictions meant to keep humans small. Many of us recognize this same voice today, whenever we're tempted to believe that breaking God's word won't have the consequences He's described, or that His "no" is really just Him being unfair.
