What does Genesis 3:23 mean?
When Adam and Eve broke God's command by eating from the forbidden tree, the consequences rippled through their entire existence. God sent them out of Eden's abundance, and Adam was now forced to work the very soil from which he'd been formed, turning what had been effortless into something requiring sweat and struggle. This wasn't just punishment, though, it was also a kind of mercy: Adam would still have work to do, still have purpose, still be able to provide for himself and his family. The ground he'd once tended in joy became harder to manage, but it remained his to work, keeping him connected to creation and to the ongoing rhythm of human life.
