What does Genesis 29:23 mean?
What happened here is one of the Bible's most consequential deceptions. Jacob had worked seven years to marry Rachel, the woman he loved, but on the wedding night Laban switched his daughters—bringing Leah instead to the darkened tent. In that culture, the marriage would be consummated and thus considered binding once Jacob slept with her. The deception worked because it was nighttime and Jacob didn't realize the switch until morning. This moment sets off a chain reaction: Jacob's anger, his agreement to work another seven years for Rachel, and the lifelong tension between the two sisters competing for his affection and their place in his family.
