“Laban said to Jacob, “Because you are my brother, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what will your wages be?””
What does Genesis 29:15 mean?
After Jacob had worked for Laban for a month, Laban recognizes it's only fair to compensate him, even though they're relatives. The question sounds reasonable on the surface, but Laban's character throughout Genesis shows he's a shrewd businessman more than a generous family member. This moment sets up the famous negotiation where Jacob agrees to work seven years for Rachel, only to be tricked into marrying Leah first, then having to work another seven years. What looks like Laban asking kindly about wages is really the beginning of a pattern of deception that will define their relationship. The verse reminds us that family ties don't always protect us from being taken advantage of, and that we should be thoughtful about the agreements we make, especially with those we trust too easily.
