“Esau went to Ishmael, and took, besides the wives that he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebaioth, to be his wife.”
What does Genesis 28:9 mean?
Esau had already disappointed his parents by marrying women from the surrounding Canaanite peoples, which went against his family's values and faith traditions. Here, he tries to make things right by marrying Mahalath, a woman from Abraham's line through Ishmael, hoping this would please his parents Isaac and Rebekah. It's a telling moment: Esau recognizes he's done wrong, but instead of a deeper change of heart, he attempts a surface-level fix by choosing a "better" wife according to his parents' standards. The gesture shows he cares about their approval, yet it also hints at his tendency throughout Genesis to take shortcuts rather than genuinely transform.
