“then this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, will be God’s house. Of all that you will give me I will surely give a tenth to you.””
What does Genesis 28:22 mean?
Jacob made a vow here after experiencing God's presence in a dream, promising that if God would protect and provide for him, he would dedicate a tenth of everything back to God and treat that stone marker as a sacred place. This wasn't a bargain struck with a reluctant God, but rather Jacob's response to encountering the divine in an unexpected moment, expressing his gratitude and commitment before he even saw the blessings come to pass. The tithe (tenth) became a meaningful way for God's people to acknowledge that everything comes from God's hand and to participate in supporting their community of faith.
