Genesis 26:9
“Abimelech called Isaac, and said, “Behold, surely she is your wife. Why did you say, ‘She is my sister?’” Isaac said to him, “Because I said, ‘Lest I die because of her.’””
What does Genesis 26:9 mean?
Isaac had done something his father Abraham had done before him: he lied about his wife Rebekah being his sister instead of his wife, fearing that men might kill him to take her. When the king Abimelech discovered the deception, he confronted Isaac directly, asking why he'd hidden the truth. Isaac's answer reveals the fear underneath his dishonesty, that he was so worried about his own safety that he felt he had no choice but to deceive. This moment can feel painfully relatable. When we're afraid or desperate, it's tempting to hide the truth rather than trust God with what scares us. What's striking is that Isaac's fear didn't actually protect him, it just complicated things and damaged his integrity. The passage invites us to notice how often our lies don't solve the problems we think they will, and how much energy it takes to hold them up. Sometimes the braver choice, and actually the safer one, is to be honest and let God handle what frightens us.
