What does Genesis 25:30 mean?
When Esau came home exhausted from hunting, he saw Jacob cooking a pot of stew and desperately wanted some. In that moment of hunger and weakness, he asked his younger brother to share the meal. The text then explains that "Edom," Esau's alternate name, literally means "red"—a reminder of that stew he craved so intensely. This moment becomes a turning point because Jacob doesn't simply hand over food out of brotherly kindness. Instead, he uses Esau's hunger as leverage to get something valuable in return, which sets off a chain of conflict between the brothers.
