Genesis 24:3
“I will make you swear by Yahweh, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live.”
What does Genesis 24:3 mean?
Abraham is asking his trusted servant to make a sacred oath before God that he won't find a wife for Isaac from among the Canaanite women living nearby. This mattered deeply to Abraham because he believed God had set his family apart for a special purpose, and he wanted Isaac's marriage to reflect that calling rather than blend into the surrounding culture. The oath itself was serious business in that ancient world, swearing by God's name meant you were inviting God to judge you if you broke your promise. Abraham wasn't being arbitrary or snobbish, he was trying to protect something he believed God cared about: keeping his family's faith and identity intact. The servant takes this oath seriously too, and the story that follows shows him praying and seeking God's guidance as he travels to find a wife for Isaac.
