Genesis 24:23
“and said, “Whose daughter are you? Please tell me. Is there room in your father’s house for us to stay?””
What does Genesis 24:23 mean?
Abraham's servant had traveled far to find a wife for Isaac, and when he met a young woman at the well, he was struck by her kindness and graciousness. This question is his way of discovering who she is and whether her family might welcome him and his traveling companions. He's asking both practically (do you have space for guests?) and relationally (are you from a family of standing that would be appropriate?), because in that culture, hospitality and family connections mattered deeply for such an important meeting. His respectful approach here shows wisdom, as he seeks to understand her place in the community before making his intentions known.
