Genesis 24:14
“Let it happen, that the young lady to whom I will say, ‘Please let down your pitcher, that I may drink,’ and she will say, ‘Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink,’—let her be the one you have appointed for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.””
What does Genesis 24:14 mean?
Abraham's servant has traveled far to find a wife for Isaac, and instead of guessing or deciding on his own, he asks God for a sign. He's asking for something specific: he wants to meet a woman who will not only give him water when asked, but will also think ahead to water his camels, which would be hard, generous work. It's a beautiful way of recognizing kindness and attentiveness in another person. What makes this moment powerful is that the servant is essentially saying, "I'll trust your judgment, God. Show me someone whose character matches what my master's son needs." He's not asking for wealth or status, but for genuine kindness and thoughtfulness. When Rebekah does exactly what he described just moments later, he recognizes God's hand in it. This speaks to many of us who face big decisions and don't know which way to turn. The servant models something worth learning: he brought his need to God, he was specific about what he was looking for, and he stayed alert to how God might answer.
