“He said, “Now take your son, your only son, whom you love, even Isaac, and go into the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I will tell you of.””
What does Genesis 22:2 mean?
God's command here is shocking and heartbreaking, which is exactly the point. Abraham has waited decades for Isaac, the child of promise through whom God said his descendants would come, and now he's being asked to give him up completely. This isn't a test of obedience to a reasonable rule, but a test of whether Abraham trusts God even when God's command seems to contradict God's own promises. The way God phrases it, emphasizing "your son, your only son, whom you love," shows that God fully acknowledges the weight of what he's asking. This isn't a casual demand. Abraham faces an impossible choice between his love for his son and his love for God, and the passage invites us to sit with that tension rather than rush past it.
