What does Genesis 22:16 mean?
God is speaking to Abraham after he's shown his willingness to sacrifice Isaac, and He's making a binding promise: "I swear by myself because you've been faithful in this impossible test." When God swears by Himself, it's the strongest possible oath, since there's nothing greater than God to swear by. This moment captures something profound about trust: Abraham didn't just believe God existed, he believed God enough to obey even when it seemed to contradict everything God had promised him about Isaac's future. The "not withheld" phrase means Abraham held nothing back, not even what mattered most.
