Genesis 21:13
“I will also make a nation of the son of the servant, because he is your child.””
What does Genesis 21:13 mean?
God is speaking to Abraham here, reassuring him about Ishmael, the son Abraham had with Hagar (Sarah's servant). Even though Sarah has just given birth to Isaac, the child of promise, God doesn't abandon Ishmael or diminish his value. God promises that Ishmael will also become a great nation, honored and cared for because he carries Abraham's blood. This is a tender moment in a complicated family story. God is saying that his covenant doesn't erase Ishmael's dignity or future, even though Isaac will be the central line through which God's promises continue. It's a reminder that God's purposes are big enough to honor multiple people and that even those born outside the main covenant still matter deeply to him.
