What does Genesis 20:4 mean?
Abimelech, the king of Gerar, discovers that Abraham has deceived him about Sarah being his sister rather than his wife. Before Abimelech has even consummated the marriage, God warns him in a dream that Sarah is another man's wife. His panicked response shows he's genuinely frightened of divine judgment, not because he's done something wrong yet, but because he unknowingly almost committed a serious wrong. In his fear, he appeals to God's justice, asking if God would really destroy an entire nation for the sin of one man who acted in ignorance. It's a raw moment of someone realizing how close they came to disaster, and it reveals Abimelech's assumption that God judges fairly.
