What does Genesis 2:21 mean?
God put Adam into a supernatural sleep and used that moment of rest to create something entirely new from his own body. This wasn't a medical procedure in any modern sense, but rather God's intimate act of making Eve as a companion suited specifically for him. The imagery suggests both the closeness of the relationship (she literally comes from him) and God's care in this creation, doing the work while Adam rested rather than asking him to participate in some painful process.
