Genesis 2:17
“but you shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.””
What does Genesis 2:17 mean?
God gives Adam one clear boundary in the garden, along with a warning about the consequence of crossing it. The "tree of the knowledge of good and evil" represents the choice to decide for oneself what is right and wrong, rather than trusting God's wisdom and authority. Death enters the world as the penalty for disobedience, which Genesis later shows unfolds not as immediate physical death but as separation from God, broken relationships, pain, and eventually mortality. This verse establishes a pattern that runs through all of Scripture: God's instructions come with genuine freedom to choose, real consequences for choosing against him, and his honest communication about what those consequences will be.
