What does Genesis 19:5 mean?
The men of Sodom have surrounded Lot's house, demanding he hand over his visiting guests so they can assault them. This moment shows the depravity that had gripped the city, where sexual violence was so normalized that a mob would openly demand it from a stranger's home. Lot's attempt to protect his guests (by offering his own daughters instead, which shocks modern readers) reflects the ancient Near Eastern code of hospitality, where protecting guests was considered a sacred duty even at great personal cost.
