“In the same day both Abraham and Ishmael, his son, were circumcised.”
What does Genesis 17:26 mean?
Abraham was 99 years old when God appeared to him with a promise: he would become the father of many nations, and his son Isaac would be born within the year. As a sign of this covenant, God commanded Abraham to circumcise himself, his son Ishmael (who was 13), and all the males in his household. This verse captures the remarkable moment when Abraham obeyed immediately, circumcising himself on the very day he received the instruction. What makes this striking is Abraham's willingness to submit to God's command even at his advanced age, and his inclusion of Ishmael alongside the promised son Isaac. Both boys entered into the covenant sign together that day.
