Genesis 17:18
“Abraham said to God, “Oh that Ishmael might live before you!””
What does Genesis 17:18 mean?
Abraham has just learned that God will give him a son with his wife Sarah, even though both are elderly. But Abraham's heart is torn, because he already has a son, Ishmael, whom he loves deeply. In this moment, Abraham isn't rejecting God's promise; he's pouring out the tender concern of a father who knows his older son's life will change dramatically when a younger brother arrives. This cry captures something beautifully human about faith: trusting God's plan doesn't mean we stop caring about the people we love or stop hoping for their wellbeing. Abraham wants both things to be true—God's purpose and Ishmael's flourishing. God's response (in the verses that follow) actually honors this, promising that Ishmael too will be blessed and become a great nation, showing that God sees and values our loves even when they seem at odds with what He's calling us toward.
