Genesis 17:16

I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her. Yes, I will bless her, and she will be a mother of nations. Kings of peoples will come from her.”

What does Genesis 17:16 mean?

God is making an extraordinary promise to Abraham about his wife Sarah, who was considered far too old to have children. He's saying that Sarah herself will be blessed and honored, not just Abraham, and that she will become the mother of a great line of people, with kings arising from her descendants. The repetition in this verse (God emphasizes the blessing twice) shows how emphatic and certain this promise is, almost as if God is saying, "You can trust this, even though it seems impossible." This matters because it shows that God's plans sometimes involve the people we might overlook or count out. Sarah gets her own blessing, her own significance in God's story, not just as someone's wife but as a mother of nations in her own right.
