Genesis 17:14
“The uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that soul shall be cut off from his people. He has broken my covenant.””
What does Genesis 17:14 mean?
God is speaking to Abraham about circumcision as a sign of the covenant, the binding agreement between God and Abraham's descendants. Being "cut off from his people" meant being separated from the community and its covenant relationship with God, not necessarily execution, though it was serious. This practice was how ancient Israel marked themselves as belonging to God and to each other, much like a seal or signature on a contract.
