What does Genesis 16:8 mean?
An angel encounters Hagar as she's running away from her mistress Sarai, pregnant and desperate. The angel's questions aren't meant to shame her but to help her pause and think about what she's actually doing and where her life is heading. Hagar has been mistreated and cast out, so her escape feels like the only choice available to her in that moment. Yet the angel's gentle inquiry invites her to consider that there might be another path, even in circumstances that feel impossible and hopeless.
