“Sarai said to Abram, “This wrong is your fault. I gave my servant into your bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes. Yahweh judge between me and you.””
What does Genesis 16:5 mean?
Sarai is in genuine pain here, and her words show the messy reality of a family fracturing under pressure. She had given her servant Hagar to Abram so they could have a child together (a practice accepted in their culture), but now that Hagar is pregnant, the dynamics have shifted in ways Sarai didn't anticipate. Hagar apparently looks down on her now-barren mistress, and Sarai feels both betrayed and humiliated. When Sarai says "Yahweh judge between me and you," she's calling on God as a witness to her hurt and as someone who can settle what's gone wrong between them. It's a prayer born from desperation rather than faith, and it reveals how easily our attempts to solve our problems our own way can damage those closest to us.
