Genesis 16:15
“Hagar bore a son for Abram. Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.”
What does Genesis 16:15 mean?
After years of waiting for the son God promised him, Abram accepts his wife Sarai's suggestion to have a child through her servant Hagar, following the customs of that time. When Hagar becomes pregnant and gives birth, Abram names the boy Ishmael, which means "God hears." By naming the child himself, Abram claims him as his son and takes responsibility for him. This moment captures both human impatience and God's faithfulness working through complicated circumstances. Though this isn't the son through whom God's main covenant will continue (that will be Isaac, born to Sarai later), Ishmael is still blessed and becomes the father of a great nation. The naming shows us that God acknowledges and hears even when our path forward feels messy or when we try to force solutions ourselves.
