Genesis 16:11
“Yahweh’s angel said to her, “Behold, you are with child, and will bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, because Yahweh has heard your affliction.”
What does Genesis 16:11 mean?
Hagar, Abraham's wife's servant, has fled into the wilderness after being treated harshly. In her despair and loneliness, God's messenger finds her and tells her she will have a son named Ishmael, which means "God hears." The name itself is the message: whatever pain she's enduring, whatever feels invisible or uncared for, God sees it and has noticed. God is not indifferent to her suffering. This moment shows us something tender about how God responds to those who feel abandoned or small. Hagar wasn't the wife, wasn't the promised child, wasn't anyone important by the world's standards. Yet God met her personally and gave her a name for her son that would forever remind her (and us) that being heard and known by God is real, even when everyone else overlooks us.
