Genesis 14:8
“The king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (also called Zoar) went out; and they set the battle in array against them in the valley of Siddim;”
What does Genesis 14:8 mean?
Here we see five kings from the cities of the plain preparing for war against a coalition of invading armies. These local rulers banded together, recognizing that their only chance against powerful enemies was to unite their forces and meet them in battle on open ground. The valley of Siddim was their chosen battlefield, presumably somewhere they felt they had some advantage. What's worth noticing is that despite their alliance, these kings are about to lose badly. This passage sets up a story where Abraham, a nomad with just a few hundred trained men, will end up rescuing one of these defeated kings. It reminds us that military might and strategic positioning don't guarantee victory, and that help sometimes comes from unexpected places when we're in desperate situations.
