Genesis 14:13
“One who had escaped came and told Abram, the Hebrew. At that time, he lived by the oaks of Mamre, the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner; and they were allies of Abram.”
What does Genesis 14:13 mean?
When war broke out between rival kings in the region, a survivor rushed to tell Abram what had happened. The fact that someone went out of their way to find him shows Abram was well-known and respected in his community, living openly among the people of Canaan. Mamre and his brothers were not Israelites but local allies who'd formed a genuine bond with Abram, suggesting he was a man of integrity and good relationships despite being a foreigner himself. This moment sets up Abram's rescue of his captured nephew Lot, showing he was someone worth warning and worth standing beside.
