“They said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top reaches to the sky, and let’s make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad on the surface of the whole earth.””
What does Genesis 11:4 mean?
The people of Babel wanted to build a monument to their own greatness, driven by fear that without it they'd lose their unity and be scattered. Their real motivation wasn't just architecture, though: it was pride and a desire to secure their own fame and control their destiny without dependence on God.
