“Terah took Abram his son, Lot the son of Haran, his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife. They went from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan. They came to Haran and lived there.”
What does Genesis 11:31 mean?
Terah, Abram's father, decided to uproot his entire household and travel toward Canaan, a land God had promised to Abram. The family left Ur, an advanced civilization in what is now southern Iraq, and began a long journey westward. They stopped in a city also called Haran (in modern-day Turkey) and settled there for a time, pausing before the final leg of their journey. This moment marks the beginning of a migration that would shape the entire biblical story. Abram was being called toward his destiny, though he didn't yet know the full scope of what God would do through him and his descendants. Sometimes our own journeys of faith involve stops and waiting periods, and that's okay, God often works through the pauses as much as through the forward movement.
