What does Genesis 11:18 mean?

Peleg was thirty years old when his son Reu was born, continuing the long line of descendants stretching back through Noah and Adam. This brief genealogical note is part of Genesis's careful record of who begat whom, marking the passage of generations and keeping the human family tree intact through the ages. The name "Peleg" actually means "division," possibly reflecting the tradition that his lifetime coincided with the earth being divided into separate lands and languages (the Tower of Babel story comes just before this genealogy). Even in these spare details, we're reminded that real people with real families lived through history, and God was attentive to their lives and their children's lives.
