Galatians 6:13
“For even they who receive circumcision don’t keep the law themselves, but they desire to have you circumcised, that they may boast in your flesh.”
What does Galatians 6:13 mean?
Paul is calling out religious leaders who were pressuring the Galatian Christians to undergo circumcision as a requirement for faith. What made this particularly frustrating to Paul was the hypocrisy: these same leaders weren't actually living by the whole law themselves, yet they wanted to impose circumcision on others mainly so they could point to new converts and claim spiritual success. Their motivation wasn't genuine spiritual concern but rather pride and the appearance of a growing movement. This speaks to something still painfully recognizable today: when someone cares more about getting you to follow their rules than about your actual wellbeing and relationship with God, that's usually a sign their focus has drifted somewhere unhealthy. Real spiritual leadership points people toward freedom and transformation, not toward performing external markers that prove the leader's influence or importance.
