Galatians 4:3
“So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental principles of the world.”
What does Galatians 4:3 mean?
Paul is describing what life was like before people came to trust in Jesus. He's saying that before we understand God's grace, we're trapped by basic, earthly forces: fear, shame, rule-keeping, the need to earn approval, and the constant pressure of "what will people think?" These things hold us captive like chains, even though we don't always see them as chains. The good news underneath this verse is that this bondage doesn't have to be permanent. Paul uses the image of childhood not to shame anyone, but to show that being stuck under these pressures is like being spiritually immature, waiting for something better. He's building toward the freedom that comes when we realize we're loved and accepted, not because we've earned it, but because we've been adopted into God's family.
