Galatians 2:14
“But when I saw that they didn’t walk uprightly according to the truth of the Good News, I said to Peter before them all, “If you, being a Jew, live as the Gentiles do, and not as the Jews do, why do you compel the Gentiles to live as the Jews do?”
What does Galatians 2:14 mean?
Paul is calling out Peter for sending a confusing message about the gospel. Peter had been eating and spending time with non-Jewish believers, but when some stricter Jewish Christians arrived, he suddenly pulled away, acting as though following Jewish laws was necessary for salvation. Paul confronts him publicly because this hypocrisy undermines the core truth that Jesus welcomes everyone equally, regardless of their background or which rules they keep. The tension here reflects an early church struggle: was faith in Jesus enough, or did people also need to follow Jewish customs? Paul's point is that Peter's behavior suggested the answer was yes, which contradicts the freedom and unity that the gospel offers. When we live one way privately but another way publicly, or when we suggest that some people need to be more like us to be truly accepted, we send the same mixed message that Peter did.
