Ezra 9:5

What does Ezra 9:5 mean?
Ezra had just learned that many Jews returning from exile had married people outside their faith, breaking God's covenant law. His grief was so deep that he spent the afternoon in fasting and torn clothing, sitting in shock and sorrow. As evening approached and the temple offering was being made, he moved from passive mourning into active prayer, falling to his knees with his hands outstretched toward God, ready to intercede for his people's sin. This moment shows us how real repentance often moves through stages: first the weight of realization, then deliberate seeking of God's presence. Ezra wasn't performing his sorrow for others to see; he was genuinely bringing his community's brokenness before God at the moment when prayers were being offered in the temple.
