Ezra 9:15
“Yahweh, the God of Israel, you are righteous; for we are left a remnant that has escaped, as it is today. Behold, we are before you in our guiltiness; for no one can stand before you because of this.””
What does Ezra 9:15 mean?
Ezra speaks here on behalf of his people after discovering they've broken God's law by marrying people outside their faith. He's acknowledging something painfully honest: God is completely just, and the people have no defense for what they've done. Even though they've survived exile and returned to their land, they recognize they don't deserve even that mercy. What makes this confession powerful is the humility in it. Ezra isn't making excuses or trying to bargain with God. He's saying, "We stand before you guilty, and we know it." There's a deep awareness that no amount of explaining or self-justification will change the reality of their wrongdoing. Yet the very act of standing before God in this vulnerable, honest way opens a door for grace. Sometimes acknowledging we have nothing to offer and no defense is exactly where healing begins.
