Ezra 8:4
“Of the sons of Pahathmoab, Eliehoenai the son of Zerahiah; and with him two hundred males.”
What does Ezra 8:4 mean?
This verse is part of a genealogical list recording which families returned to Jerusalem with Ezra after the Babylonian exile, around 458 BC. It's simply noting that Eliehoenai, from the family line of Pahathmoab, led a group of two hundred men on this journey home. While the names and numbers might seem dry to us, they matter deeply: they represent real people reclaiming their identity and their place in God's community after decades away. Each family counted here had chosen to make the difficult journey back to rebuild their city and temple, rather than staying in the comfort of exile. The careful record-keeping shows that their decision and their presence mattered and were remembered.
