Ezra 6:14
“The elders of the Jews built and prospered, through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. They built and finished it, according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the decree of Cyrus, Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia.”
What does Ezra 6:14 mean?
After years of exile and setback, the Jewish people finally completed rebuilding their temple, and this verse credits both human encouragement and divine permission working together. The prophets Haggai and Zechariah spoke words that stirred the people's hearts and gave them courage to keep going when the work felt impossible or forgotten. At the same time, God had positioned pagan kings to officially authorize and support the project, turning even earthly rulers into instruments of his purposes. What's striking here is that the passage doesn't pit faith against practical reality. The temple was rebuilt because people listened to prophetic voices, yes, but also because kings issued decrees and presumably provided resources. Sometimes God works through direct spiritual means, and sometimes through the ordinary structures of government and human order. Both matter, and both deserve recognition.
