Ezra 5:12

What does Ezra 5:12 mean?
The Jewish leaders rebuilding Jerusalem are explaining their history to a Persian official, and they're being honest about why their temple lay in ruins for decades. Their ancestors had turned away from God repeatedly, and as a consequence, God allowed the Babylonian king to conquer them, destroy their sacred temple, and take them into exile. It's a sobering acknowledgment that their suffering wasn't random or unfair, but came from their own broken relationship with God. Yet there's something hopeful beneath this admission too: they're not hiding from their past or blaming others entirely. By owning what happened, they're showing genuine repentance, which often marks the beginning of restoration and renewal.
