“We inform the king that, if this city is built and the walls finished, then you will have no possession beyond the River.”
What does Ezra 4:16 mean?
The officials writing to the king of Persia are trying to scare him by claiming that a rebuilt Jerusalem will become so powerful it will rebel and stop paying taxes to his empire. Their warning is deliberately exaggerated, meant to manipulate the king into halting the Jewish people's reconstruction efforts. What's worth noting is that these opponents weren't being honest about their real motives, which were rooted in local jealousy and ethnic tension, not genuine concern for the Persian throne.
