Ezra 4:14
“Now because we eat the salt of the palace, and it is not appropriate for us to see the king’s dishonor, therefore we have sent and informed the king,”
What does Ezra 4:14 mean?
These officials are reminding the king that they're bound to him by loyalty and obligation, partly because they receive his provision and support. When someone ate another person's salt in the ancient world, it meant they were under that person's care and protection, creating a debt of loyalty that couldn't be broken. By pointing this out, they're essentially saying, "We can't remain silent when something threatens your honor, because we're committed to serving you faithfully." It's their way of explaining why they felt compelled to report the troublemakers rebuilding Jerusalem's walls, even though it meant contradicting an earlier order the king had given.
