What does Ezra 4:1 mean?
When the Jewish exiles returned from Babylon and began rebuilding their destroyed temple, their enemies in the surrounding land heard about it and saw it as a threat. These "adversaries" weren't necessarily foreign armies, but rather people who had settled in the region during the exile and didn't want to see Judah's power or influence restored.
