Ezra 3:11
“They sang to one another in praising and giving thanks to Yahweh, “For he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever toward Israel.” All the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised Yahweh, because the foundation of Yahweh’s house had been laid.”
What does Ezra 3:11 mean?
After decades in exile, the Jewish people had returned to Jerusalem and laid the foundation of the rebuilt temple. This verse captures their spontaneous joy as they sang responsively, affirming together that God's goodness and faithful love had never abandoned them, even through their darkest years. Their shout was so loud it shook the region, a physical expression of relief, gratitude, and hope rekindled. There's something beautiful here about how grief and celebration mix. Some of the older people present actually wept when seeing the foundation (it was smaller than Solomon's original temple), yet everyone joined in the praise anyway. They weren't denying loss or pretending everything was restored to how it had been, but they were choosing to remember and declare that God remained faithful through it all. That same declaration, "his loving kindness endures forever," is something that invites us to cry out too, whether we're celebrating or grieving or both at once.
