Ezra 2:18
“The children of Jorah, one hundred twelve.”
What does Ezra 2:18 mean?
This is part of a census list documenting the Jews who returned from exile in Babylon to rebuild Jerusalem. Jorah was apparently a family clan among those exiles, and this verse simply records that 112 members of his descendants made the journey home. These genealogical records mattered deeply to the returning community because they proved lineage, established property rights, and helped restore a sense of identity and belonging after seventy years of displacement. Even though it reads like dry statistics, each number represented real people choosing to leave behind their established lives in exile to return to a homeland they'd never known and help rebuild their temple and city.
